Gemstone Identification Equipment

Equipment Used:

10x Darkfield Loupe: which is a standard loupe, but includes a specially constructed area called a viewing well. This well enables you to view a stone and/or jewelry against a black background with strong lateral lighting. This form of lighting is called "dark-field illumination" and is when light enters thru the side of the stone. This type of lighting makes it much easier to identify certain types of inclusions and whether or not a stone has been treated in some way.

Gemological Refractometer w/ RI Liquid: measures the refractive indices of gemstones. When light passes through any object, including a gemstone, the light waves are bent. Different types of stones have different refractive indices, so by learning the refractive index, you gain valuable information about the identity of the stone.
Singly or Doubly Refractive: In some gemstones, the light is split into two different beams. Such a stone is said to be doubly reractive, which means it will show two different RI readings.
Birefringence: The difference between the two refractive indices that a doubly refractive gemstone displays is the measure of the gemstone's birefringence.
Many gemstones have the same or nearly the same RI, so by calculating the stone's birefringence, you gather valuable information about the stone's identity.
You have to rotate the stone several times, perhaps 30 degrees at a time, to corroborate the correct reading.

Digital Caliper: Gives you 20-millimeter and 3/4 inch maximum measurements. Used to record outside dimensions, inside dimensions, or depth measurements. This caliper reads dimensions within 0.01 millimeters or 0.0005 inches.

Jennings JS-VG Gemological & Grain Scale (20g x 0.002g): Key Features: This is a very precise scale in which you not only can obtain exact carat weight of a gemstone but you can also weigh in grams, ounces, pennyweight, troy ounces, grain or milligram.

JEM-II Diamond Tester: Accurately measures the thermal conductivity of the gemstone to determine whether it is a diamond or a diamond simulant. It is equipped with a metal alert, designed to reduce the possibility of a false positive reading caused by touching the metal holding the stone. Easy calibration with the level meter volume to match different size stones and can distinguish stones as small as 0.2ct. Also, is equipped with an ultraviolet light to test fluorescent reaction of stones.

Special Jewelry Tools: Microscope, Gemstone Holder, Flat Nose, Round Nose, Chain Nose, Side Cutting and Stone Setting Pliers; Diamond Head Drill and of course tweezers.

You never touch a gemstone with your hands, fingers, etc. when your in the process of creation.

FYI: Sterling Silver will tarnish over time if not kept in a closed container such as a plastic bag with a piece of anti- tarnish paper or you could even use a small piece of plain white chalk.

Outside of diamonds, gemstone's should not be worn 24/7 365 days. Temperature changes, sunlight, oils, soaps, detergent can change a gemstone's color.
